Cumberland, MD – Today Congressional candidate Roger Manno (MD-06) announced the endorsement of SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (AFL-CIO).
One of North America’s most dynamic and diverse unions, SMART includes 216,000 members representing sheet metal workers, service technicians, bus operators, engineers, conductors, sign workers, welders, production employees and more.
SMART includes 2 divisions:
- Transportation Division (formerly United Transportation Union or UTU) is comprised of approximately 125,000 active and retired members of the former United Transportation Union, who work in a variety of different crafts in the transportation industry, and is the largest railroad operating union in North America, with more than 500 locals.
- The Sheet Metal arm of SMART, formerly the Sheet Metal Workers International Association, represents 136,000 members in the sheet metal and related trades.
“I’m really excited to announce the strong and early support of SMART, and the thousands of hard working sheet metal, air, rail and transportation workers throughout Maryland and the 6th Congressional District,” stated Manno. “I’m reminded of the stakes every time I visit the CSX rail yards of Cumberland, where 100 workers have recently lost their jobs, or when AMTRAK negotiations tall, or when Davis Bacon wages slide into the crosshairs of Congress. Hard working Marylanders understand that their livelihoods and futures hang in the balance, as congress debates and debates and debates on solutions. In times of uncertain and unfair economic shifts, I’m excited to roll up my sleeves, just as I have in the Maryland Senate and House, to get to work for Marylanders who desperately need a voice. Thank you to SMART union workers for their faith and support.”
